An impacted tooth is a tooth that emerges only partially or does not emerge at all. There are several reasons for a tooth not emerging. Sometimes, it is just simply that there is no room.
Impacted Teeth are Not Uncommon
Impaction is extremely common with the wisdom teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth are frequently painless; therefore, you may put them out of your mind. However, they can lead to a misalignment of the bite.
If the tooth is partially surfaced, but not fully, this can cause problems as well. The tooth can trap food and plaque, which may lead to tenderness and swelling of the gums and even tooth decay. It can also cause bad breath.
